BACKGROUND
In the 1980s Amalia as she was fondly known, (she was also known as the cement lady) broke the market record for the highest price ever paid for an artwork. She paid $6.4million for Turner’s “Juliet and her Nurse” making the cover of the New York Times.
One of the earliest investors in Puerto Madero, In 2002 she contracted Uruguayan Architect Rafael Viñoly to design a space to house part of her collection. It was completed in 2008 just 4 years before her death. Alongside William Turner’s masterpiece is a portrait of Amalia by Andy Warhol. A collection of international artists from Rodin to Chagall leads down to a chronological collection of Argentine art from the 19th century to the 1990s.
