On Tuesday, February 14 we will come together to discuss The Gift of Rain. The meeting will be at 1 pm at Libros del Pasaje, Thames 1762, in Palermo. Please come if you like to discuss books, whether you have read this one or not.

Books for the following March and April are listed below. In general, the meetings will be held at Libros del Pasaje on the second Tuesday of the month, at 1 pm.

The Gift of Rain is the first novel by Malaysian novelist Tan Twan Eng. It was published in 2007 by Myrmidon Books in the UK and the following year by Weinstein Books in the US, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize that year.
This remarkable debut saga of intrigue and akido flashes back to a darkly opulent WWII-era Malaya. Eng’s characters are as deep and troubled as the time in which the story takes place, and he draws on a rich palette to create a sprawling portrait of a lesser explored corner of the war. Hutton’s first-person narration is measured, believable and enthralling.

In March we will discuss Disgrace by J.M. Coetze. And in April, we will discuss Nutshell, by Ian McEwan.

For the menu, the restaurant will have three cocktail options: Aperol Spritz, Caipirinha and Mojito, and glasses of white, red and sparkling wine available for our choice.
The Chef, Martín Dolz, will prepare a selection of homemade charcuterie and cheese, and two escabeches, one with seafood and one vegetarian.
The value per person is ARS $430 and includes both the Chef’s appetizer selection, two beverages of choice and tip.

We are going back to El Burladero next Wednesday for the simple reason that in Michael’s opinion this restaurant offers the best lunch value in the entire city – plus they have a new menu! The brothers that run El Burladero, Fervor, Sexto and Sotte Voce know how to deliver excellence. As expected we will be served a glass of cider or beer to go with the bread and entrada, and a glass of wine with the meal.

As of this November Tripadvisor now rates this venue as the 58th best restaurant in the city out of 4,253. Please note that the menu does not include water or coffee. If you order either it will be an additional 40 pesos per. Tap water will be available on the table.

Our price will be 285 pesos which includes tip and is about 16% more than our cost in March!

The November book will be If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino.

For those with an amorous affair with books, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler may well be the ultimate love letter to the reader. Calvino’s novel is a masterfully created, startlingly unique work of fiction.
