Book Club Meeting – Tuesday, July 8 at 3.30 p.m.

Dear Book Lovers,

BAIN’s next Book Club meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 8th.

Come enjoy your afternoon coffee with us and participate in a lively discussion with other BAIN members.

This month we are reading The Girl With The Pearl Earring (1998) by Tracy Chevalier. The book transports readers to a bygone time and place in this richly-imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings. History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius . . . even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

The book, as always, is available electronically. (Click on title above for the kindle version on Amazon)

Please feel free to join us even if you don’t manage to read the book.

Meeting Details:

Book:  The Girl With The Pearl Earring (1998) by Tracy Chevalier.
Day: Tuesday, July 8th
Time: 3:30 p.m.
Location: Café Antonia, located inside the Libros del Pasaje bookstore in Palermo.
Address: Thames 1762
RSVPloucrie@yahoo.com (Julia) – We will be calling the café the day before to reserve a large table for all of us, so please let us know to include you.

For those who like to prepare ahead, we have selected three more books during our last meeting for the upcoming months:

August 12th: The City And The City (2009) by China Miéville.

The book has been named as one of the best book of the year by the Los Angeles Times, the Seattle Times, and Publishers’ Weekly. When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad. To investigate, Borlú must travel from the decaying Beszel to  its equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the vibrant city of Ul Qoma. But this is a border crossing like no other, a journey  as psychic as it is physical, a seeing of the unseen.

September 9th: The Good Earth (1931, Pulitzer Prize Winner) by Pearl S. Buck.

Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck’s epic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel talks about a vanished China and one family’s  shifting fortunes. The book steels the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall.

If you have any questions about the titles or meetings of the Book Club, please contact me at loucrie@yahoo.com

Hope to see you all next month!

-Julia

Luncheon – Wednesday, June 25 at 12.30 p.m.

Please note the new luncheon day – Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

With the return of the cold weather my thoughts turn to heartier food and that makes me think – German – so this month we are dining at Bodensee. The restaurant was originally founded in 1925 and changed hands in 1959 when Ruben and his son Javier took over. The location was originally in Las Canitas but is now in Palermo. The sides of sauerkraut, German potato salad and my favorite the apfestrudel are all lovingly prepared on the premises by Ruben’s wife.

The price for the meal includes the entrée, choice of beverage, dessert, cover and tip. I will provide extra bottles of wine to supplement the one glass that is included. I am assuming that everyone will have the apfestruded with crème for dessert, it is really not to be missed!

With inflation raging as it is I am sure that this will be your last opportunity to go out and have two courses with beverage for less than 100 pesos.

The menu is attached – my favorites are numbers 7, 14 and 15.

Place: Bodensee, phone 4774-9064
Time: Wednesday, June 25 at 12:30 pm
Location: Honduras 6000, Palermo, esq Arevalo
Cost: 99 pesos (tip, beverage and cover included)
Correct change will be appreciated

Dinner – Thursday, June 5

Thursday, June 5 at 9 p.m.

This month we reintroduce BAIN restaurant dinner functions, which have at times been monthly events. The idea is to try different well recommended restaurants around town. Sometimes we go fancy, sometimes simple. Given the size of the group (often 10 to 20 people) a fixed price menu with some options is pre-negotiated by the event coordinator and the price announced to potential attendees in advance.

Jim Isaacs, who has hosted a number of these events, will be in charge this month, with a new dinner director coming in for July. For this event, Jim has selected Dale Perejil al Toro, a Norteño (north Argentina/Andean) influenced parilla in Villa Crespo. The restaurant is owned by the former head chef of a very fine Palermo restaurant. Jim reports that prices are low for the quality of the food served, and that the venue is quite beautiful, with the main eating area located in the living room of a traditional (1920?) Argentine house with 20 foot high ceilings.

Pictures and reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g312741-d2371017-Reviews-Dale_perejil_al_Toro-Buenos_Aires_Capital_Federal_District.html

We will share salads and a bell pepper, egg and rice appetizer. A small supply of (sustainable, farm raised) caiman (S. American alligator) milanesas will be ordered too, for the adventurous to try out! Thereafter you will have a choice of pork shoulder (highly recommended; recipe brought with owner from 4 star restaurant), grilled chicken (moist and good per taste test team) or vegetarian/squash ravioli with cream sauce (also quite good). Multiple side dishes including Norteño humita (sweet corn stew) will be on the table for all to enjoy, and doggie bags may well be needed. Dessert options will be chocolate cake, ice cream or fruit salad.

The event price is $ 230 per person, inclusive of a half-bottle of wine and a soda or mineral water per person. Start time is 9:00 p.m.; that is early for Argentina, but many of our members get up early in the morning to go to work and we try to run on a schedule. Exact change appreciated but not required.

Address: Dale Perejil at Toro, Av Estado de Israel 4483, Villa Crespo.

RSVP to jisaacs61@hotmail.com – space is limited.
