Parque Chas and Agronomía neighborhoods, the new “barrios” in the early 20th century

We would like you to join us on a walking tour in the city. This time we will head west of Buenos Aires to walk through the labyrinthine streets of Parque Chas and visit the Park Agronomía.

The tour: We will walk through the streets of Parque Chas, and learn about its origin and how it fits into the city of Buenos Aires. We will see the centre of a neighbourhood and neighbourhood identity.
-Beliefs of the People: La Virgen Desatanudos.
-The Park of Agronomía in the context of the parks of Buenos Aires. >The working class housing: from inexpensive houses to a balm of calmness in a hectic city.
-The University of Buenos Aires (UBA)
=Pachamama: the month of Mother Earth.

We will finish the tour with a visit to the botanical garden of the UBA and a sensorial experience that will connect our senses to Mother Earth in a new way by being a part of the park. Don´t miss it!

Parque Lezama: Uncovering the myths of the foundation of Buenos Aires

Many cities have myths of their foundation; Buenos Aires has its own. We will walk parts of Parque Lezama, going back in time to learn about the moments of the foundation of Buenos Aires, and how these became part of the construction of a possible Argentine national identity. We will also visit some selected elements of the National Historic Museum, connecting the park, the museum and Argentine identity.

This month we will try a relative newcomer, a 135 year old club that was established in May of 1882. This magnificent example of “belle epoque” architecture sits on the corner of Cordoba and Florida and is, of course, Centro Naval – the home of the Naval Officers Club.

The elegant dining room on the 6th floor offers several options. The daily executive menu offers a main course that changes daily, dessert, coffee and beverage (water, soft drink or wine). There is another special which adds an appetizer and more main course choices from the a la carte menu. Pricing with tip for the first choice will be 220 pesos, the second choice is 250 pesos. The dessert choices are served from a cart that includes flan, budin de pan, fresh fruit and a few other options. Additional glasses of wine can be purchased for a reasonable 30 pesos.
Mandatory dress for this lunch will be SMART. The club has a dress code that does not allow shorts, denim, tee shirts, casual footwear, etc. On a recent visit where there were about 40 people dining, only four were not wearing jackets!

A guided walk through one of the most picturesque areas of the city

La Boca is known around the world and visited by every tourist who comes to Buenos Aires. But we don’t often connect the modern La Boca with the city’s history. On this tour we will take a look at La Boca with a different lens, relating the Río de La Plata with the work of the well known La Boca painter Benito Quinquela Martín.

Ezequiel will guide us through Caminito Street, a former tenement, and then take us to visit one of the floors of the Quinquela Martín Museum.

Centro Naval is a magnificent building inaugurated on May 14   1914.  Based on the French architecture of the Belle Epoque, it is decorated with paintings mounted in gilt-leaf frescos.

It is the central seat of a traditional civil association founded in 1882 by a group of young Marines to serve as a font of professional knowledge. At present the building is used for exhibitions, conferences, concerts, academic and social activities  and  tournaments from different disciplines.  It also houses a  library, a  hotel, and a restaurant.

The Museum, dedicated to the decorative arts, situated in a magnificent residence of French neoclassical style, built in the early twentieth century was declared artistic historical monument May 16, 1997.
 
The current inventory exceeds 4,000 objects, ranging from Roman sculptures to contemporary silverware handmade creations. The greatest interest of the collection lies in parts of European decorative arts and oriental sculptures and paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, many of which belonged to the family Errázuriz Alvear.
