July Monthly Luncheon

This month we are on a quest to find great baby back pork ribs.

We will eat at what has to be the busiest parrilla in the city. I have never passed this place after 10 pm without seeing a line of hungry customers waiting for a seat!

For those of you who are averse to pork or to meat in general they do serve a nice fish dish and have the usual cuts of beef available. However, my recommendation is to go with the ribs.

I plan to do the beverages “family style” with wine and water available at the table. You should plan on a single glass of each for the included price and extra glasses of wine will be at 10 pesos each.

Place: Recoleta, exact address provided upon RSVP.

Date: Thursday, July 25

Time: 12:30 pm

Cost:  100 pesos which includes wine, water, and tip.

Please e-mail to reserve a spot with Michael: mweldon213@yahoo.com.  If you are new to BAIN, or would like to join as a guest, let Michael know so that he can provide you with the exact address and location.

May Monthly Luncheon

Our May luncheon will be at a Peruvian restaurant that has only been open for two months and is delivering great food with reasonable pricing.

The restaurant is conveniently located about one block away from the Tribunales Subte stop on the D line – close to the main court house. A favorite dish is the Seco de Cordero and the ceviche dishes are also very good. The menu is quite extensive so I am sure you will find something to your liking.

Upon arrival I will collect 25 pesos which pays for your cover charge, tip and non-alcoholic beverage. The balance can be given to me before you leave.

Date: Thursday, May 30

Time: 12:30 pm

Cost: 25 pesos plus actual food and alcohol (if any) costs per menu.

April Monthly Luncheon

I hope some of you have taken advantage of the BA Food Week with the lunches for 99 pesos at some
very nice restaurants.

So, for our April lunch we are going to do better on the price and I believe you will agree with me that
the quality of the food will be great also.

We will dine at a typical Porteno restaurant, conveniently located in Retiro.

This month we will change the logistics a little. I did not want to pick a set menu and price because there are
too many options to consider – so the entire menu will be available.

I will collect 20 pesos from you when you arrive and this will cover the tip and water (con or sin gas).

My three favorite dishes are the Bondiola de cerdo, the Venetian style liver and the Baby back ribs!

Date: Thursday, April 25
Time:  12:30
Cost:  20 pesos plus actual prices from the menu

February Monthly Luncheon

Date: Thursday February 28

Time: 12:30 pm

Location: SRA headquarters, Florida 460

Cost: 200 pesos

Reservations are mandatory and your choice of a main course should be indicated.  Respond to: mweldon213@yahoo.com

At Florida 460, between La Valle and Corrientes sits the former home of the family of ex-president Roque Sáenz Peña.

The Peña home is currently owned by the Argentine Rural Society (SRA), it was established in 1866 by the country’s wealthiest oligarchs and is today known mostly for their annual livestock show, La Rural, held annually in Palermo. Their motto is “Cultivating the soil is to serve the country”.  Today the SRA is very much in the headlines as the government is trying to expropriate La Rural. You can read a full description here: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociedad_Rural

The high-end real estate which is the headquarters of the non-profit Argentine Rural Society is a testament to the importance of agriculture to the wealth of Argentina. The red paint stains above the doorway are the lasting evidence of the number of protests held here through the years – most recently in September of 2012.  Historically the Rural Society is noted as an institution designed to keep the wealth in the hands of the few. Today the Rural Society is not as insular as it once was but protesters maintain that it still serves only to propagate the needs of big business. A visitor will have to be very persuasive to get the chance to go inside and take a limited peek, as the institution’s doors are usually closed and gated off.

Sociedad Rural Argentina is part of the Group of Eight  –  eight organizations of great power in Argentina:  Rural Society Argentina (SRA), Argentina Industrial Union,  Argentina Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Construction, the Stock Exchange, the Association of Private Bankers Argentino (ADEBA),  Confederations Argentine Rural (CRA) and the Association of Banks of Argentina (ABA).  This sounds to me, more like the Captains of Industry rather than the oligarchy.

This very private venerable institution, which is frequented by the power elite of the city, will be our destination for a special February luncheon.

Our meal will begin with a special

– cured ham appetizer.

The main course will have a choice of 3 items:

– Lomo with mushroom dressing

– Lomo with pimienta dressing

– Noquis with sauce

For dessert we will enjoy

– apple crumble with ice cream

The cost including tip, water/soda and coffee is 200 pesos.

Wine will be available at 15 pesos per glass.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the last day of February.

January Monthly Luncheon

The January 2013 Buenos Aires International Newcomers Luncheon will be on Thursday the 31st, the last day of the month.

The cost of the meal including water or lemonade, red or white wine, dessert or coffee and the tip is only 75 pesos.

As always correct change will be appreciated.

The very first Mongolian Barbecue restaurant (Gengis Khan Mongolian BBQ) was opened in 1976, and was located in downtown Taipei, Taiwan. Typically, diners choose various ingredients from a buffet of thinly sliced raw meats (beef, pork, chicken) and vegetables. These ingredients are given to the griddle operator who adds the diner’s choice of sauce and transfers them to one section of the hot griddle. Oil and sometimes water may be added to ease cooking, and the ingredients are stirred occasionally.

The ample size of the Mongolian barbecue griddle allows for several diners’ food to be cooked simultaneously on different parts of the griddle, the operator walking around the outside of the grill once or twice moving the food while walking. When cooking is complete, the finished dish is scooped into a bowl and handed to the diner.

Gengis’s House opened in Buenos Aires almost a year ago so we are visiting the restaurant for a second time. You will start off by choosing a meat – chicken, beef, or pork. Tofu is also available for the soy lovers. Then you can go to town piling what seems like an infinite variety of ingredients on top – green onion, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, sprouts, pineapple and more, they also have cilantro! – finally you give your bowl to the grillmaster who decides what sauces to put on and adds either the large or small noodles – rice is also an option if you do not want the noodles. Now is the time to be more assertive if you do or don’t want a certain sauce – lemon ginger, garlic, BBQ, soy & super spicy sauces are all available. After cooking, the dish will be brought to your table.

This month we are going to take a fun trip through the mainstays of Korean food. We will sample the three main types of Korean cuisine – Cheyuk Gogui, Bibim Bap and the famous Yache Twiguim. These main courses will be accompanied by at least 7 different small dishes, the ever present Kimchi and other treats depending on the day’s market. These small dishes are the part of the meal that is the “fun” – you never know what will show up. Indeed, even when you see the dishes you will probably not be able to identify them by sight, only by taste – maybe.

Cheyuk Gogui is barbequed pork prepared and grilled with traditional Korean flavoring and seasonings. Bibim Bap (one of my favorite dishes here) is a rice dish served with an assorted mixture of seasoned vegetables, cooked meat, fried egg, sesame oil, etc. etc. Our third dish (vegetarian) is best described as vegetable tempura, Korean style. There are no choices to be made, simply come and enjoy. Everything will be served family style and the small plates will be re-filled as needed.
For those not familiar with Korean food I suggest you use the following link to a good write-up: www.koreanfood.about.com/od/ koreanfoodbasics/a/Korean101.htm
Here are a few excerpts from the Trip Advisor’s restaurant section reviews:
“Excellent choice all round and we loved everything we ate…. the quality is excellent and on a par with the best Korean food in America or Seoul. Seems incredible here in BA, but absolutely true.” “This place by far has been the tastiest meal since we’ve been here. It is totally authentic and on par with any great Korean restaurant in San Francisco and Los Angeles!” “Bi Won stands out as a breath of fresh asian air.” “…. vale la pena completamente.”
Bi Won is hidden away in Congresso on the very edge of Once. It is about three blocks away from the famous Water Company building on Córdoba. The address is Junín 548, there is no sign so just look for the address number on Junín between Lavalle and Tucumán.
The Morning Coffee is yet another opportunity to purchase your End of Year Party tickets! Bring your pesos – AR$100 for BAIN members, AR$200 for guests.

September’s Monthly Lunch

Il Vero Arturito

San Luis 2999, Abasto , CABA

Tel: 4961-4280

The good news is that the owner of one of my favorite restaurants has agreed to let us dine at her restaurant this Thursday September 27th. This is no small concession as the venue is packed to overflowing every day and she does not want to disappoint her regular customers by not having a table available.

The bad news is that we will be limited to two tables of 10 each – so act quickly if you want to attend.

Il Vero Arturito’s  is “… in the pantheon of great restaurants in town, one of those endangered places that we like …”.  “Arturito …  has no competition and things are simple … nothing new-wave… here you eat well and traditional!” The dining is “family” style with platters of food being delivered to share. Although the guides list the restaurant as Italian the specialty of the house is Kid (baby goat) and this is the dish that will be featured for our September luncheon – the Chivito Provenzal with papas espanol.

However, the pasta (all homemade) is not to be overlooked and, in fact, I can say without hesitation that their Vermichellis Carbonara is the best that I have ever had – and you know that I am pretty picky! – this dish will also be on our table. The third dish on the table will be a red sauce pasta – the Fusilli Fileto.

This traditional neighborhood restaurant is a slice of history, linen napkins and tablecloths, a staff of professional  attentive waiters and a great menu.

The following quote sums up my feelings:  “Excellent, I go quite often and love it. The service is perfect and the food is plentiful and tasty. “

The full menu for our luncheon is:

A welcoming empanada, chivito and pasta dishes to share, water, wine and a champagne toast to finish off.

The cost including tip is 100 pesos.

RSVP is mandatory to: mweldon213@yahoo.com

The restaurant is on the corner of San Luis and Jean Juares. If you are taking the bus it is a 3 block walk from Puerrrydon and San Luis or a 1 block walk from Cordoba and Jean Juares.
