January Monthly Luncheon

The January 2013 Buenos Aires International Newcomers Luncheon will be on Thursday the 31st, the last day of the month.

The cost of the meal including water or lemonade, red or white wine, dessert or coffee and the tip is only 75 pesos.

As always correct change will be appreciated.

The very first Mongolian Barbecue restaurant (Gengis Khan Mongolian BBQ) was opened in 1976, and was located in downtown Taipei, Taiwan. Typically, diners choose various ingredients from a buffet of thinly sliced raw meats (beef, pork, chicken) and vegetables. These ingredients are given to the griddle operator who adds the diner’s choice of sauce and transfers them to one section of the hot griddle. Oil and sometimes water may be added to ease cooking, and the ingredients are stirred occasionally.

The ample size of the Mongolian barbecue griddle allows for several diners’ food to be cooked simultaneously on different parts of the griddle, the operator walking around the outside of the grill once or twice moving the food while walking. When cooking is complete, the finished dish is scooped into a bowl and handed to the diner.

Gengis’s House opened in Buenos Aires almost a year ago so we are visiting the restaurant for a second time. You will start off by choosing a meat – chicken, beef, or pork. Tofu is also available for the soy lovers. Then you can go to town piling what seems like an infinite variety of ingredients on top – green onion, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, sprouts, pineapple and more, they also have cilantro! – finally you give your bowl to the grillmaster who decides what sauces to put on and adds either the large or small noodles – rice is also an option if you do not want the noodles. Now is the time to be more assertive if you do or don’t want a certain sauce – lemon ginger, garlic, BBQ, soy & super spicy sauces are all available. After cooking, the dish will be brought to your table.

New Novel by Bonnie Ridley Kraft

Author Bonnie Ridley Kraft

announces the release of a new novel

To Hold a Rainbow

book number three in the World Designs Ltd. Series

At the Three Frontiers area, where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay come together in the dense rain forest, smuggling is rife. Drug lord Ramón Subizar is planning a major drug push on Christmas Eve at the borders. But the Gendarmería Nacional of Argentina intend to crash Subizar’s party. Add to the brew a volatile horse called Don Diego, a Buell motorcycle, a gypsy aeroplane pilot, and the drug lord with his new product of opium, and there is guaranteed to be an explosion.

From Dog Ear Publishing, To Hold a Rainbow follows The Kámen and The Long Way Home in the World Design Ltd. series.

Quote from an Amazon reviewer of The Long Way Home: “…one could tell while reading it that the author was familiar with the characters and locations from personal travel.”

Quote from an Amazon reviewer of The Kámen: “Could hardly wait for the next books to come out to see what was going to happen and where in the world the characters would go next.”

All three books are available from Amazon and from Barnes & Noble, in perfect bound or in eBook formats.  Direct links:

El Burladero: New Spanish Place in Town

El Burladero

Two favorite restaurants in the city, Fervorand Sottovoce, are owned by the same company.  One of Jon’s coworkers told him about a new concept to the same company, El Burladero, and we went to try it out 2 days later.
El Burladero (Uriburu 1488, between Peña & French, 4806-9247) is the newest theme for this restaurant group, and though it just opened in August of this year, it has received overwhelmingly great reviews in every outlet I have found. We just barely got a reservation for the night we wanted to come in, the only time slot they had available was 10:30pm, and it was completely packed when we arrived AND when we left. The restaurant is simply decorated, lots of framed pictures and Spanish artifacts lining the walls.  There are large chalkboards advertising signature dishes and a few seats at the bar for folks – like us – who need to wait until their table is ready.  As as perk of waiting, they offer you the choice between a glass of champagne or a small draft beer – the beer is nothing special but it is rare to find anything on draft in the city.

Once we were at a table, we were offered the same great selection of bread they have at Sottovoce and Fervor, and they have an appetizer list filled with tapas and seafood.

Each main course dish is large enough to share, though we decided to go against the waiter’s suggestion and order three dishes for our group of 4 people.  As a result, we had enough food for 8 people, and the waiter gave us an “I told you so” look that was virtually caught on film.  This was him dishing out our paella, the smaller portion which was more than sufficient for 4 people.  There are a few different types of paella to choose from, we chose the seafood option, though there are at least 3 other varieties.

Many of the dishes can be ordered a la carte, you can choose the protein (fish, chicken, beef, seafood…) the side and the way you want it to be prepared.  We chose the fish of the day, served with grilled vegetables “Spanish style”and a chicken dish served with rice and a saffron sauce.

All of the entrees were tasty, fresh and quite different from anywhere else we’ve eaten in the city.  The chicken dish was a little low on meat, but considering the amount of extra food we had, I’m not complaining.  This is a great addition to our eating out repertoire, we are happy campers!
